Good project and helpful for public Brexit debate, featuring some interesting policy ideas. But there are a couple of issues here IMO - thread
IEA series aims to debunk outlandish Project Fear claims such as "planes won't fly" but then concedes in the small print that these are conceivable scenarios:
This is presumably why the project is branded as "Fear Checkers" as opposed to "Fact Checkers"
The IEA's "Fear-Checkers" propose solutions where the UK does a deal with the EU, such as "retain access to the Single Aviation Market.". But 'no deal' literally means we have been unable to do a deal with the EU.
The Fear-Checkers say these deals are mutually beneficial to UK and EU. But mutual interest of both sides in having deal hasn't helped so far. Why would that change if we enter 'no deal' phase - i.e when despite mutual benefit of having a deal, we haven't been able to reach one?
The Fear-Checkers' proposals in some cases, such as the briefing on aviation, would require the UK to cross some of its own red lines, such as ECJ jurisdiction. Again, if government is incapable of crossing those red lines now, why would it be capable in a no deal scenario?
Of course, one answer to that last Q is: 'no deal' Brexit would be so chaotic it could force UK (or EU!) to abandon red lines. But that would sound like the same kind of Project Fear language that the Fear-Checkers oppose!
That said, interesting series and worth the time of Remainer and Brexiteers alike/ ends
