Choice is not the problem but the grasp of consequences is hence it is a gross misrepresentation to classify the Brexit ref as biggest democratic exercise. /1
In plain terms, if you chose what can't be chosen it is neither a democratic problem nor a crisis of government but lack of grasp to understand the the choice was never on offer. /2
If you chose option with severe impact on peoples existence (take e.g. people w/ friends and family whose livelihood depend on FoM) then they are not bound to support the decision. Quite the opposite, since their rights are threatened it can be argued that... /3
... fundamental principles of democracy (e.g. that the state provides protection for those who lived according to the law) is suspended. They will resist on whatever the cost. /4
This extends to economy. It should be clear by now that leaving w/ no deal or on CETA terms is such a threat for a substantial amount of people hence they have the right to oppose and are entitled that their representatives defend their rights. /5
What leaves a unsatisfying EEA+ solution where no right is in danger but the purpose of the leave vote got lost and their is even less control. This is however not a governance problem. /6
It was foreseeable (plenty of studies were released on that one) and if it wasn't foreseeable for the voters it tells you more about them (and their ability to grasp) than about the ruling elites. /7
And since it was foreseeable a significant part chooses an option which didn't exist. Before somebody comes that losers are supposed to accept their loss and help: yes, but not if their livelihoods (and I don't mean live & dead in a physical way) are in danger. /8
In that moment they will ask you either to bugger off or they will do whatever the cost to prevent implementing your choice or mitigate impacts on them on the choosers expense. /9
Democracy in any way doesn't mean anything goes. If that isn't understood people basically neither understand democracy nor the meaning of "social contract" they claim to be in need to be upheld. 10/10
