(Thread) Prius or Pickup?

I started reading.

My opinion so far: The book breaks down complex ideas & is extremely readable, but (so far) isn’t adding to concepts I’ve read elsewhere.

The premise is based on the idea that people who self-identify as conservatives. . .
1/. . . tend to be more fearful than those who self-identify as liberal.

Psychologists have explored this idea.

I summarize some of the psychological research beginning here👇
2/ The Prius and Pickup idea comes from what people who are fearful (less open to new ideas) tend to choose certain things: Pickups, standard American foods like , John Wayne.

People more open to new experiences and nuances tend to prefer Jane Fonda, ethnic foods, etc.
3/ There’s a spectrum. It isn’t all or nothing. Some people have traits of both camps.

(I like John Wayne as Tom Doniphon in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance—but I don't think that counts)

4/ The book makes the interesting point that when the two parties realigned after the Civil Rights movement, with all the conservatives (and authoritarians) congregating in the GOP, it was because race became an issue, and race divided people into world views.
5/ For people who haven’t been exposed to these ideas, the book will blow them away.

It’s also very light and readable, so it definitely has a place on the shelves.

I’ll keep reading and may report again.
6/ For more on how the Republican Party became authoritarian (some of which is touched upon in Prius or Pickup) see this thread 👇
