Nick Timothy asks how the UK cd be a more effective negotiator. My take is different (thread): thesun.co.uk/news/7501794/t…
1. Know what you want: no point saying ‘Canada +++’ if you are not 100% sure what that means. Seriously: EU will see straight through it.
2. Know how to make what you want, work: threatening to walk away only works if you are absolutely certain that your plan can work.
3. For example, EU not so worried about maintaining common rules, but more about what you do when those rules diverge (because this makes trade less efficient). Square that circle and you’ll make progress.
3. Know how and when to compromise: EU are negotiation experts – it’s not that they won’t compromise, it’s just that they know when to compromise and what to ask for in return.
4. Time your interventions wisely: EU expects UK to diverge (otherwise why vote to leave single market?) but never a good idea to acknowledge this intention so early on (I'm speaking to you Michael Gove). Makes EU more cautious and unwilling to compromise.
5. Know who you are negotiating with: EU is a legal ecosystem that loves process – its preferences should not come as a surprise as they are clearly outlined in negotiating guidelines/speeches.
6. Know your negotiating partner’s style: EU has a distinct style. Spoiler: ‘Get stuffed’ will get UK nowhere. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read this: chathamhouse.org/expert/comment…
