If you think negotiating UK's withdrawal has been hard, wait until discussions on future relationship begin.. (short thread)
1. Different priorities for different MS: EU position will be outcome of careful internal negotiations (MS x gets this, MS y gets that)
2. EU inflexibility is its strength: "we can't really budge on this issue because of internal compromises". Also one of the reasons why EU is so successful at getting what it wants out of trade negotiations..
3. Can UK get MS on its side? Well, UK wd only be able to persuade MS of merits of Chequers when/if UK provides lots more detail on how it cd work in practice (hint: governance, governance, governance)
4. But.. EU unity still more important: some MS favour hard approach, others soft - but still put EU unity before siding with UK
5. Creative thinking: still, Brexit opportunity to rethink way EU cooperates with neighbours; but to get EU on board, UK must be much clearer on what it wants, how it wd work & how far it is willing to compromise
