How one can go about building a large global B2B/SaaS business from India? One of the ways as follows:
1. Pick a problem that you are passionate. The passion has to be sufficiently deep to help you drive 24x7 for at least 3 years with the mental strength to drive through lots of obstacles. If you find success, you should be ready to put an additional 7 years, at least.
2. In the category, study all the leading companies, their product, go2market, financials, customers and understand the challenges and opportunities for you to disrupt them. See whether you expect customer expectations are changing, but, existing companies are ignoring.
3. Figure out whether there are any niche segments of the market not happy with the current products or new use-cases and your product idea is very exciting for them. Overall, you need a good entry strategy into the market, before you win in the market.
4. Test your product idea with at least 50 potential users and figure out a) how to spot them b) how to reach them c) how to influence them and d) what would it take for them to use. Come up with a strong value proposition of why users would buy your product.
5. Once you have this market insight, it is time to move all-in. With your passion, drive and the story-of-life, influence the best of the best talent to join you in building this product and business. Hire the best. Yes, seed/angel money helps in this step.
6. Build a world-class product and get in front of as many customers as possible and test it out. Start testing out your distribution strategy of getting your products in front of enough customers.
7. With each week, as more and more customers use the feedback and you iterate the product fast enough, you get into the product-market fit groove. You will start getting good reviews on your product and you are on a good standing for growth trajectory.
8. Doubling down on team, culture, recruitment, metrics, and overall growth is key, including raising money to fuel the same. The goal is to grow as fast as you can each year so that your startup gets the momentum needed to scale.
9. I think there is an extraordinary opportunity for entrepreneurs from India to build massive B2B/SaaS companies purely by focusing on large global with a high-quality product. Having a base in India is a massive advantage on unit economics of demand-gen, inside sales, and R&D.
10. When I started investing in B2B/SaaS, I use to talk about Indian startups creating products with 2x the value at 1/2 the cost and go after slow-moving giants. I am more than ever convinced on this now. It is possible to create products with 3x the value at 1/2 the cost.
