I see that dunking on dorms has re-emerged as a fun way to spend our time as we fight for scraps of affordable housing. I defended them earlier this year: google.com/amp/s/amp.slat…
I know it’s easy to be like, “Defending co-living is actually YIMBY fake-woke, functionally neoliberal bullshit,” but, frankly, the worst world I can imagine—the one that we live in—outlaws deviance by making things like co-living, or SROs, illegal.
I am literally a rose emoji (I pay my DSA dues, but honestly y’all don’t make me feel comfortable enough to attend meetings in D.C.) and it bums me the fuck out to see socialist defenses of single-family homes by the proxy of advocating for all social housing only.
I hate to harp on this bc the real problem is wealthy, white n’hoods that have the time, resources to oppose. But a rising left should be better than this, and not try to distribute obviously exclusionary ideas to oppressed classes (tho I get why that is viewed as a reparation).
Let the co-living crap into especially Tenleytown, but every neighborhood.
I want the incentives to favor weirdness and deviance and unconventional relationships. I want odd couples and happy singles and families whose kids grow up kicking it with fellow apartment dwellers. You do know all our laws treat this as illegal, even though it’s normal?
Scoff on dorms because they’re capitalist, or whatever the issue is, and you’re scoffing on the ability to live a life that’s slightly to the side of what we conceptualize as normal and acceptable—which is something I find totally *unacceptable.*
