Making a twitter list of physical, natural and social scientists who do climate - now over 1,400 strong! - has been an interesting social experiment. Here is the list, and what I've learned! twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…
1/ I thought I knew most of the people doing some type of science on twitter - and I was WRONG! I was only following about 1/5 of the list before I made it, and I still find more new faces and names every day.
2/ The vast majority of us on twitter are the younger crowd - doctoral students, postdocs, assistant professors. We start to tail off on the associate level and only a few very senior folks are here (but it's fun to see them!).
3/ The gender breakdown of the list is great! I haven't run the # but based on what I've seen, I'd estimate at least 40% women. As a member of @ESWNtweets that makes me so happy! And even happier--when I see someone I didn't know who also documented their #dayofscience last week!
4/ On the other hand, the geographic/cultural distribution is very heavily skewed: most of us are from North America, second most are from Europe, then only a small fraction originally from Asia, Africa and S. America, most of those at institutions in NAm or the UK or EU.
5/ Interestingly, lots of us on the list do climate but did NOT mention it our bios! So unless people already had climate/globalchange in their twitter bios, I asked them to please update them to help list users understand what they did. I was delighted that all but 2 people did!
* we scientists are an agreeable lot

** I granted one exception: if they had sea level rise or ice sheets or glaciers in their bio, I didn't make them update, because honestly - you can't study those things and NOT study climate. I think it's impossible.
6/ Most nominated others to the list. Only a few were willing to nominate themselves. Some just followed me without saying anything (hoping I'd notice? I tried!). A few DM'd. We are terrible at self-promotion, people! Let's practice here on twitter where the stakes are low.
7/ But most of all, I was amazed by the incredible diversity of what we do: and I hope you will be, too. So please: check out the list. Subscribe to it. Follow a few people who look fascinating. Heck, follow the whole list! Here it is again: twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…
8/ I was also inspired to start two new lists. Please check them out!

Experts who talk climate: twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…

Innovators who fix climate: twitter.com/KHayhoe/lists/…

(Yes I know I spelled it inovators on the list but that's because it didn't give me the extra character)
9/ And finally, @brandondaly2018 and @climatewmargs are curating a list of undergrad + masters students studying and interested in climate! Please subscribe there and if you are one, send them a ping to join it. twitter.com/brandondaly201…
10/ If you are wondering, "am I or is person X on the list?" I don't know: I wasn't able to memorize all 1400 and I can't check every new recommendation by hand. But you can! Here's how: wikihow.com/Find-Out-How-M…
11/ unf, as we know, there are a lot of bad actors on Twitter + some may use this list to broaden the number of people they harass and attack. Pls feel free to block anyone unable to communicate in a civil manner, and if you want a copy of my own block list, just let me know.
12/ If you would like to search a list for tweets or profiles containing a specific word or name, here is a simple way to do it! Say you are looking for people who study drought. Just enter this in the Twitter search field:

drought list:KHayhoe/Scientists-who-do-climate
13/ If you would like to follow everyone on the list with just ONE CLICK, you can do it by downloading the google chrome browser. Open it and sign into twitter, and follow these instructions: chrome.google.com/webstore/detai…
