Not since Schleicher and Pappen have we seen so many politicians constitutionally incapable of grasping the danger and rising to the occasion. The Democratic Party really is why we got Trump. And there's no Churchill in sight.
Someone needs to spend more time writing about what's gone wrong with them. Every day we get another book, another expose, about what's gone wrong with the GOP. But by definition, if they can't beat Trump and this GOP, there's something equally wrong with the Democrats ...
And they're not helped by a fawning media that so badly wants Trump out of power (for good reasons) that it refuses to try to figure out why the Democrats are incapable of missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
All they needed to do, after all, was run on the platform, "We're not Trump; we won't tank the economy; and we'll calmly run the government without hysterics and drama." That message=landslide. Instead, we have real reason to fear they've screwed up *two* elections against ...
the most unpopular person in the known universe, and all of human history, really, given that the global population has never been this large. A man the very sight of whom causes most Americans to flinch in revulsion. How could a long-established political party,
with access to so much money, so many professional political consultants; the party that produced Roosevelt, Truman, Johnson, Clinton, and Obama, be unable to persuade the better part of the US public that they're at least more trustworthy than Donald J. Trump?
I truly don't understand what's going on in that party, and because Bannon is in a sense right--they mainstream media has become "the opposition party," they're not helping us to understand.
They're not using what must I'm sure be their limitless access to Democratic Party members to try to figure out what's so wrong with that party that they can't figure out a) that Trump is a national security emergency, so they'd better learn to win; and b) how to win.
Maybe in two days I'll be surprised and discover that they knew what they were doing all along, but I doubt it. They've run a midterm campaign so flailing, so lacking in message, so lacking in gravity--
--and so full of the language, attitudes, and instincts that Americans so *clearly* hate that they'd prefer to put Donald Trump's grubby fingers on our nuclear weapons than hear another word of it--that I suspect they won't even take the House. I hope I'm wrong,
but they truly seem to have learned nothing, and there's got to be a reason for that. No institution that venerable and experienced, with this much at stake, with so many resources at its disposal (financial, intellectual, managerial, the sympathy of the media)--
can be this incompetent for no reason. I'd really like to understand those reasons. Journalists who are bleeding column ink describing the follies of the Trump Administration and the degradation of the GOP would be doing us all--and the country--
--a much greater service by trying to figure out what it is. Because whatever's keeping that Party from rising even a quarter of the way to the occasion needs to be exposed, and the pressure to FIX THE PROBLEM needs to be intense.
Any Party that can't run against Donald J. Trump and win every single ballot cast has a problem even more serious than the GOP. The GOP at least *wants* to win, which is the prerequisite to being a political party.

It doesn't even seem to me the Democrats genuinely want power--
--and for the life of me, I don't know why.
