This should be a lesson for white Democrats everywhere- this is why minorities and in particular black people are the backbone of the party. Call it the Beto effect if you need because white people need credit for everything. But Beto would have been nothing w/o black allies
and in return, our black allies in the party were elevated and are going to make so much better for so many people in these areas. It's why every person running for House, Senate, and the Presidency in 2020 should ask themselves- "how can I achieve this same synergistic effect."
No Democrat will ever win ANYTHING nationally without the full fledged support of the African American community. It's that simple. They're the most reliable portion of the Democratic coalition. It's why I chose to support Clinton in 2016 and not Bernie.
Both would have been fine Presidents, especially compared to Trump. But I chose to listen to the AA community, the most reliable Democrats AND the people with the most to lose. Pardon the pun, but unlike a lot of white people, they have skin in the game.
I'm a straight white male in West Virginia. I'm gonna be just fucking fine no matter what happens. So I choose to listen to the people who have the most to lose. And not only do they have the most to lose, they have the most to offer the Democratic party. AND THEY SHOW UP.
SO y'all can keep chasing millenials and suburban white women and white working people. In 2019 and 2020, I know where I will be taking my cue. From the AA community and the folks in the Democratic party who are choosing to work with them to the benefit of all of us.
