Europe's border is not where you think it is. Here's why:
#humanrights #migration #refugees #IDS2018 see @visionscarto #map @CDB_77
1/5. From 2010 to 2014, the number of refugees and migrants coming to Europe increased from 60,000 to 280,000. The EU decided to crack down on migration by paying other countries to deal with migration for them.
2/5. The EU started making financial agreements with African strongmen and #dictators to ramp up #border security, technical aid and data collection. As a result, other countries are actually controlling the EU border, moving the border further south to #NorthAfrica.
3/5. However, these deals have made migration even more dangerous. This has been the case in Libya, which is the main point of entrance to the EU for African migrants. Due to political instability in #Libya, militias and gangs have taken over border control.
4/5. #Migrants passing through Libya are often #victims of violence such as human trafficking, torture, and kidnappings. Many are being held in detention centres that are openly violating human rights.
5/5. Despite all these HR violations, the EU continues to finance these countries to stop migrants from leaving Africa. Closing borders doesn’t stop migration, it only make it more dangerous. EU money should go to assuring safe journeys to Europe. urlz.fr/8dLI
