1) #Brexit, what does democracy actually mean & @jeremycorbyn - thread

There's a simple fact at the heart of Brexit, when enough people realise that any Brexit, no matter how soft, is worse than staying in the EU then it will die

Labour Leadership is keeping the lie alive
@jeremycorbyn 2) after all what is democracy? What does it mean? Surely the foundation is that everyone who votes must as much as possible have an informed choice.

They can ignore that information of course but the information must be clearly available to all otherwise democracy fails
@jeremycorbyn 3) the fundamental truth of Brexit is that every possible deal will leave us worse off. It's perfectly valid to know that and yet still believe that other priorities are more important, as long as everyone knows it in the first place.
@jeremycorbyn 4) at the moment May has a deal, it's a compromised fudge that's bad for the country but it is essentially what Brexit looks like, give or take some minor tweaks

It's vitally important that the country understands that, accepts it & decides accordingly on the path forward
@jeremycorbyn 5) Labour leadership are actively working to hinder that process. Through "party before country" priorities & general political cowardice they are propogating the myth that a *different*, Labour led Brexit wouldn't be so bad.

For those who want to believe this, they're there
@jeremycorbyn 6) in this Labour & the ERG are colluding in a basic, catastrophic falsehood, that if only they, and not May, had been in charge then Brexit would have been largely painless for the UK.

This is not doing the country any favours, and is a cynical, selfish move
@jeremycorbyn 7) the *one* advantage of May's deal is that it finally crystallised what Brexit looks like, what the inevitable consequences are and how a fudged "worst of all worlds" compromise is the only way to reconcile Leave promises with reality.
@jeremycorbyn 8) This deal was the first & only opportunity for the UK to see Brexit as a real, flawed, compromised fudge. To see it for what it actually is, as opposed to what was promised, for the first time, & to make a decision accordingly

Then Labour ruined it by offering unicorns again
@jeremycorbyn 9) we'd expect this from the ERG who are zealots about brexit and would tear down & throw away anything to get it.

But Labour are playing exactly the same game, in fact arguably they're worse (which is hard to imagine but nonetheless true)
@jeremycorbyn 10) as far as we can tell Labour's position they are after:
a CU in which we have a veto on new trade deals & policy, & can negotiate our own deals
and SM without FoM
This is essentially what Vote Leave were offering, a cherry picking fantasy
@jeremycorbyn 11) but because left wing people don't want Brexit to be bad, and they don't want to face the stress of a #PeoplesVote, they choose to believe this position from Labour, because they trust the leadership.
@jeremycorbyn 12) our only hope in Brexit & our democracy is for enough people to understand what Brexit actually is and what consequences it has

If they still choose it, fine, we'll have to live with that.

But perpetuating the myth that it *could* be better is damaging & irresponsible
