No coach in the ACC had a bigger decision to make this year — one that could’ve gone horribly wrong — than Dabo, and he got it absolutely right. The way he handled the QB situation alone warrants ACC CoY.
I’ve also never understood why having a talented roster negates you coaching ability. Isn’t recruiting a part of coaching? And Dabo has built the culture that has made the recruiting at Clemson what it is. Think about where Clemson was recruiting 5 years ago. Night and day.
Moreover, taking a team used to winning and getting the most out of that talent again and again and again is really hard. Not to take away what a guy like Dino or Bronco did with lesser talent, but keeping 18-21 year olds motivated when they’ve already tasted success is hard.
And there have been years where I thought Dabo’s in-game coaching was questionable at times. But not this year. Clemson has been as well prepared as any team in the country… which is saying something when you get everyone’s best shot.
I argued the same for Jimbo for years at FSU. Sadly too many folks have a simple coach of the year metric: Results - Expectations = Coaching success. If expectations are always 12 wins, you never get a shot at it. But Dabo deserves it this year.
