Same mechanism used in France that I described in my NYTimes editorial back in 2005.

Technocrats are still trying to parse the yellow vests.

"It’s not just the protests’ fierceness and geographic spread that have taken the country by surprise.. There is also no clear media consensus as to what they are protesting.."

Technocrats like Bloomberg's Leonid Bershidsky see all opposition to their policies as illegitimate:

"There’s nothing democratic about the emergence of Facebook group administrators as spokespeople for what passes for a popular movement."

bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
When opposition to poorly formulated technocratic policies does emerge, despite strict media controls in place to prevent it, they depict it as a nefarious conspiracy or the actions of extremists.

When that doesn't work. The technocrats blame Facebook.
Yet another example of how the technocrats deal with opposition to failed policies. They find examples of extremism within a large protest and use it to discredit the entire thing.

It doesn't work because it is obviously fraudulent analysis designed to confuse/mislead.
More technocratic apologia from the NYTimes editors:

"(concessions) would be big mistakes... Mr. Macron and his government have to pay much closer heed to the France outside Paris... and they need to make far greater efforts to explain their measures (but do not back down)"
