This one is on the biggest film sins regarding disability; able bodied people playing disabled roles
Almost every disability driven film is able-bodied people playing disabled characters. All your faves? Able bodied people chasing Oscars. That is a big thing in Hollywood; you want an Oscar/International recognition? Play a disabled character.
Theory of Everything. Eddie Redmayne LOVES taking an aul minority role (sorry Ed) and it has paid off. He is a phenomenal talent of course and he definitely has "bring home to your ma" potential, but the reality of it is he's profited off a wonderful disabled public figure
Obviously have to mention Daniel Day Lewis, arguably the best actor the world has ever seen. His portrayal of Christy Brown has been criticised for being over the top and a caricature of what Cerebral Palsy truly looks like
Patty Duke was given an Academy Award for her portrayal of Helen Keller (who, most people dont know, helped found the ACLU)
Holly Hunter won an oscar in 1994 for her role in The Piano as a mute piano player
There are so many others that I can talk about (honourable mention to nominees Leo DiCaprio for Gilbert Grape & Sally Hawkins for The Greatest Showman). The reality is, film loves disabled films; but not told by disabled people
This is what I mean when I talk about a need for inclusion. I'm tired of seeing others benefit from the stories of disability while I scrape together sources for my thesis because disabled academics or stories aren't given the same notice
