Question to those who are expert in these things: what about this as an attractive and statesmanlike proposal by the Leader of the Opposition?
Labour would support a short run government of national unity, to last 6-8 months, headed by eg Hilary Benn, with one item only on its agenda: to deliver a referendum between Stay and the present Withdrawal Agreement (+perhaps a more EEA-ish Political Declaration, If negotiable).
I don’t know, but it’s possible enough Tories would support it (given the news just now) to make it possible. I’d also guess the SNP and other opposition parties bar the DUP would too.
The unity govt would seek an A50 extension, hold the ref, and implement it (either signing the WA or revoking A50). It would then resign, leaving it to the HoC either to support a new Govt or call an election.
I’m only a lawyer: but it would seem to me both a statesmanlike and an attractive course for the Leader of the Opposition to adopt.
