I obviously am not in a position to judge whether the Isis threat in Syria justifies a significant, continued military presence, but the arguments in favor are weak
The US establishment is traditionally clumsy in how it defines threats from Islamic radicalism. In some societies literally everyone could be a suspect at some point. The argument that the US should stay around to see what happens is unjustifiable
The war on terrorism has lost all boundaries, all limits. It has attached itself to the American psyche like a parasite, feeding deep pulsions. It renders any knowledge of the real world impossible
At this point any break with the hellish carrousel of the last 17 years is better than the alternative
