1. My great thanks to @sandrapdangelo & @WTapMD for elaborating on the $250,000 grant they got from @CureSarcoma for uterine #leiomyosarcoma. curesarcoma.org/uterine-leiomy… Their research will help people with other #sarcoma subtypes, too. more ...
2. @sandrapdangelo says grant will go toward 2 immunotherapy #ClinicalTrials. She hopes the first will open @sloan_kettering in late spring. The first will combine a CSF-1R (DCC-3014 deciphera.com/pipeline/dcc-3…) with #avelumab (#Bavencio en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avelumab). more ...
3. @sandrapdangelo doesn't know when the second #ClinicalTrial will open, but it will combine a PARP inhibitor (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PARP_inhi…) an immunotherapy drug that has not been chosen yet. "Other #sarcoma subtypes will be allowed to enroll," not just #leiomyosarcoma. more ...
4. @sandrapdangelo: The "goal is to try and eradicate bad immune cells (macrophages) that we think cause cancer to grow. We know that these bad macrophages are highly prevalent in many #sarcomas, including" #leiomyosarcoma. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrophage more ...
5. We don't mean to slander macrophages, white blood cells integral to the immune system. They do important work. But why are they failing to eat more #sarcoma cells? How can we make sarcoma cells tastier for them?
6. @sandrapdangelo: "The macrophage story was first published by @MattRijn. We're obviously always excited to collaborate on such projects and something we could explore as well." Dr. van de Rijn also got a $125,000 grant from @curesarcoma to study liquid biopsies. more ...
7. It would be amazing if doctors could take a blood sample (i.e., a liquid biopsy) & perhaps use macrophages to predict which patients had cancer, how bad the cancer was, did it recur, etc. (Thanks to @pkuhn1 for his mentoring on this.) more
8. Here's some recent research from @MattRijn on looking at tumor DNA circulating in the bloodstream of people with #leiomyosarcoma. #sarcoma ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29463554
9. Getting back to the 2 #ClinicalTrials @sloan_kettering: Tissue biopsies will be taken from patients before and during treatment to try to determine if tumors are responding to the drugs. @sandrapdangelo said this may give us more info on #sarcoma subtypes. more ...
10. @sandrapdangelo: "We're thrilled about these upcoming projects." Many #sarcoma patients will be, too. They often want to know if #immunotherapy will work for them and what trials will be available. #leiomyosarcoma
Btw, I wish I knew more about Dr. Richard & Valerie Aronsohn who donated the $$ to make these grants possible. I can thank @CureSarcoma & the researchers, but I hope the donors know how much we appreciate what they did.
