Statement by France 🇫🇷, #Germany 🇩🇪, the United Kingdom🇬🇧, and the United States 🇺🇸 on the IAEA`s Latest Report on #Iran`s Nuclear Program.

"We, the governments of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, take note of the report by the International"
Atomic Energy Agency (#IAEA) that Iran has implemented a substantial change in the configuration of some of its centrifuges without informing the Agency in advance. These centrifuges produce high-enriched uranium up to 60% and are located at the #Fordow Enrichment Plant.
As stated by the Agency, this unnotified change is inconsistent with #Iran's obligations under its #NPT-required Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement. Such lack of required notification undermines the Agency’s ability to maintain timely detection at Iran’s nuclear facilities.

#RussiaGoesNuclear: Hopefully, journalistic & political discussion of possible disaster at the #ZaporizhzhiaNPP will address the core of the matter: The cause of the catastrophe will be an, under the #NPT, official nuclear-weapon state & #UNSecurityCouncil permanent member. /1
The #RussianFederation will conduct a weaponization of civilian atomic power and high radioactivity in an offensive war of annihilation against #Ukraine - an official non-nuclear weapon state and UN founding member (the #UkrSSR entered the #UN with a separate seat, in 1945). /2
Moscow's hybrid military deployment of Europe's largest atomic station as the equivalent of a neutron bomb is fully intended to result in massive health damages for millions of Ukrainians, and even potentially their mass murder. /3

3/ What we know is that, whether they succeed or not, they’re failing -- we have seen the drafts on the table and it’s clear that, no matter what, they are not going to advance their disarmament obligations with the urgency the current security environment requires. #NPTRevCon

🧵The #NPTRevCon is starting tomorrow at the UN headquarters in NYC, read the thread below to learn more about it ⬇️
1/ It’s the review conference of the #NPT, which prohibits its 186 non-nuclear-weapon states parties from ever acquiring nuclear weapons, while obliging its five nuclear-weapon states parties🇨🇳🇫🇷🇷🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸 to pursue nuclear disarmament. #NPTRevCon
2/ However, the #NPT does not outlaw nuclear weapons nor prohibit their use. It also does not provide any timelines for when the nuclear armed states are to achieve nuclear disarmament. States parties have failed to adopt a new plan for its implementation for more than a decade.

At least Shyam Saran has woken up after 7 years. Good.

Hope the veil has also dropped from his eyes regarding his junior, Jaishankar, who is still assiduously enabling Modi?

‘Dictator envy’? 😂Sounds like Trump n Kim/Putin/MBS Take your pick.…
But his analysis is flawed. While India may have ‘never faltered’ in REJECTING the #NPT on principles, it accepted it de facto once it went ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal. Had to. 2005 IAEA vote. Saran led @MEAIndia

US accused Iran of violating #NPT n wanted Indian ‘yes’.
The same #NPT that not only is India NOT a part of, but as per Saran now, India ‘never faltered’ to ‘reject.’ N Saran was claiming he was averting a crisis for Iran! Like, India knows Iran’s interest better than Iran itself!!

The slide started here.…

Unacceptable! Today, the UK government is expected to announce that it will increase its nuclear weapon stockpile cap by 40% - to 260 nuclear warheads.… Here are 5 reasons why this is such a shocking move (thread)
#1 The UK has 215 nuclear weapons right now, with each warhead estimated to have an explosive power of 100 kilotons or 15x Hiroshima. The UN has said the risk of nuclear weapons use - intentionally or by accident - is higher than ever. These weapons do not make us safe.
#2 Nuclear weapons are illegal now (h/t #nuclearban). Increasing stockpiles violates international law. Every year that nuclear-armed states continue to possess and build nuclear weapons, they must be held responsible for putting the world at risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.

What to make of Trump's support for Putin's proposal for summit of the leaders of Perm 5 members of the UNSC on n-arms control and security issues? What does this mean for #NewSTART, #NPT, and further action on disarmament? Some background & analysis. 1/
A P5 leaders summit on nuclear weapons is a potentially important development. There hasn't been such a mtg since Sept. 2009 when Obama convened UNSC for Resolution 1887. See… This time around real progress is going to be difficult. Some background ... 2/
its important to note that the P5 heads of state summit idea is not a Trump initiative; the WH is responding to an invitation from President Putin sent to the leaders of the P5 members of the UNSC in late-January. Putin spoke about his concept in a speech a few days earlier. 3/

'In whatever way the nuclear situation is examined, the inescapable feature is what enormous quantities of weapons have been amassed' – Movement towards a first-strike capability by the #US and #USSR, the #SALT talks and European security were a focus of the 1970 #SIPRIYearbook.

Foreign Minister @HeikoMaas is meeting representatives of 16 countries today at #StockholmDisarmamentMeeting to discuss the Non-Proliferation-Treaty #NPT. What’s on the agenda? (Thread) 1/5
The #NPT has been the cornerstone of the nuclear order for 50 years. Without it, many more states would have nuclear weapons today. It consists of three pillars: 1) non-proliferation 2) disarmament 3) peaceful use of nuclear material 2/5
The problem: The #NPT is undergoing a crisis. The nuclear-weapon states must do more to live up to their responsibility and disarm. At the same time, there is a danger that more states will acquire or have already acquired nuclear weapons (e.g. Iran and North Korea) 3/5

1) If need be, #Iran can - under a state of exception - withdraw into itself, ration essential goods, enforce strict austerity policies and wait for more suitable political circumstances in D.C for eventual negotiations.
2) Meanwhile, it can withdraw from the #NPT, decrease its level of commitment to the #JCPOA, and institute a precautionary inspections regime in the Strait of Hormuz that would slow down shipping traffic while shooting up the price of oil.
3) The Iranian government has done this before during the 1980s when it ran the country on a $7 billion budget which encompassed $4 billion in war expenditures; And can do it again.
