For me, this tweet by radical fundamentalist Shelton is the epitome of all the reasons why I oppose this man & what he stands for. It is at once, ultra-conservative, ignorant, insensitive & hypocritical. Allow me to spell this out in a small thread. #auspol
It is conservative. Conservative politicians of the ilk of Shelton, Bernardi, Abbott, Dutton always put their theory before reality, ideology before people. Too many examples. While the world gets warmer, Shelton puts climate science denialism first. Here, He puts himself
and his bucket list to climb Uluru before Indigenous ppl. It is colonialist. In effect, it is, 'I don't care abt yr sensitivities, I care only abt what I want'.
It is ignorant. He says that St Marys is a man-made structure, implying that its claim to spiritual status is superior
to that of Uluru, bcos it is a natural rock formation. This ignores the religious culture of the Anangu ppl, 60,000 yrs of religious belief, ritual, ancestral connection & geographical locatedness. Only a buffoon wld say no-one owns it.
It is insensitive. Shelton's fundamentalism places his own religious belief at the centre of divine truth. All else is error. It informs his every word, his every move. The attempted move into politics is to try to legislate his religious views into Aust'n life. As such, he does
not need to show respect for Anangu spirituality. This tweet & its predecessor show clearly that he does not. He will comfortably redefine Uluru for the Anagu ppl while ignoring what THEY say. That's a bully.
It is hypocritical. Shelton bleats daily abt religious freedom. This is code for the the legislated privileging of his form of fundamentalist evangelicalism. That will always come first. While this is an attack on the separation of church and state,
it is much more. In these two tweets, Shelton shines the spotlight on what kind of a man he really is. He is a hypocrite, He will trash the religious sensitivities of the Anangu ppl while loudly declaring that his own myopic spirituality must be prime, protected & promulgated.
No other Christian leader to my knowledge has come out & backed him in this. On the contrary, most leaders & their flock wld be appalled. But Shelton will do this in any field. Climate breakdown, religious freedom, LGBTIQ issues, marriage equality. He and other religious-based
AusCons have a very specific religious agenda & are desperate to enter the Parliament. Aust will be worse off if we let them. These two tweets of Shelton sum for me the worst attributes of a values system that is puritanical, sexist, homophobic and science denying.
The sheer gall of so-called 'Christian goody goody' Shelton writing these tweets abt another group's spirituality earns him the gold medal for hypocrisy. His colours are now nailed to the mast and they are black & ugly.
