Politicians and media in the US have propagated the myth that the government is separate from the people, which has created a culture of apathy and absent assent. It’s turned the entire process upside down and in this crisis it’s integral to remember our power. 1/
Parties have adopted the concept of engineering consent, or manipulating the populace to seeing things their way. But right now, with this major, major crisis, we have to assert our right as a people. 2/
Republicans are calculating right now whether it’s more advantageous politically to stand by Trump, say nothing, or sever their loyalty. I know. Some have told me in so many words. They’re hoping the sense of danger will pass, not the danger itself. 3/
We need to be in their ears, in the media’s ears, demanding this be treated as the terrible moment it is. If we don’t assert ourselves, if this goes unchecked, there’s no telling what crimes and treasons will be in our future. We’re already a long way down a dim road. 4/
Republicans and Democrats alike need to understand the citizenry is aware that they hold the power of consent. This is with Trump and with all governance. Decades of suppression has to be undone. 5/
And if they won’t act, and if the media won’t portray this as the crisis and collapse it is, the citizenry has to be ready to get in the streets and stay there until the fever breaks. This is an integral moment, and god knows what happens if it breaks the wrong way. 6/6
