I predict hydrogen is going to become the next energy transition battle ground. On one-side there will be the coal and gas companies and the other the renewables industry. Good to see @AustralianLabor come down on the side of #renewables today. #climateelection2019

Some thoughts on the ALP's announcement today... 1. This Plan to make Australia a renewable hydrogen exporter a key step to making Australia a renewable superpower. But there are other renewable export opportunities - services, DC cables etc
2. Renewable hydrogen is going to play an important role in lowering the climate pollution of some of our key trading partners such as Japan as the #OneEarth project shows
3. Here in Australia renewable hydrogen is likely to play a key role in heavy transport/freight and some industrial processes, but EVs will be more efficient than hydrogen cars and we should electrify heating as much as possible.
4. Currently CEFC and ARENA can't fund fossil fuel projects as I understand, so its a good play by the ALP to support renewable hydrogen, but not hydrogen from coal (though they will get pressure to do so).
5. This announcement also shows the important role that @ARENA_aus plays in developing Australia's renewable energy future. To date $1.3billion has been cut from ARENA's budget. The ALP should return this funding.
6. It is also essential that we don't see a replication of what is happening in the gas industry. We want to ensure Australian's enjoy the benefits of low-cost renewables, as well as our friends overseas. The ALP should also commit to continuing the current renewables boom...
When the boom turns to bust you lose the supply chain, economies of scale and the cost advantage that comes with a continually growing industry.

1. Two elections (Federal & NSW) where renewables and climate are squarely on the agenda. I hope to see some of our NSW & Federal Politicians adopt these Big 5 ideas to end the energy wars bit.ly/2BoV9m9. This would mean actual political leadership finally!
2. Lets make 2019 the year when locked out energy users such as renters (like me), low-income households, people who live in apartments & have shaded roofs can actually start to access solar in a big way, with policies in place to support them. For example bit.ly/2BZwOS

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.

#Hydrogen #FCEV vehicles are very unlikely to become any kind of transport solution because they just don't make environmental or economic sense when compared to battery electric vehicles. #BEV
Hydrogen itself is just another fossil fuel as almost all of it is made from natural gas with carbon emissions as a significant byproduct. So the basic premise of the #FCEV is destroyed right there because it's just another fossil fuel car and not #Green at all.
The only other significant means of production is electrolysis which accounts for only 4% of all commercially available hydrogen fuel. It's used for only this tiny amount of production because it's massively inefficient, throwing away up to 75% of the electrical energy input.

Thread: Lots of good news in the 2017 energy numbers, just out from @EIAgov - renewable energy is pushing out fossil fuels. Our #BeyondCoal analyst @sustainablejohn helped us break it down (cc @drvox @bradplumer @MikeGrunwald):
1. At the national level, #coal generation was down 7 out of 12 months in 2017 compared to 2016, and this led to an annual year over year decline of 2.5% in coal generation. Coal’s short lived, so-called recovery appears to be over.
