Earlier today a news item went viral, claiming that the sacked head of TETFUND accused the Minister of Education of demanding bribes from him. Turns out it’s FAKE news. @PremiumTimesng has issued a correction. Apparently an interview made in Hausa was MISTRANSLATED & MISREPORTED
Here’s where one has to respect @PremiumTimesng - they’re one of VERY FEW Nigerian online media orgs that make ANY effort to acknowledge wrong, & publish corrective ‘Editors Notes’. Most just carry on as if publishing & NOT retracting fake news is their constitutional right.
Dear @PremiumTimesng - kindly try and give the correct story as much visibility as the fake one got, thanks. That’s the least you can do.

This revenue diversification of a thing - @firsNigeria has done some impressive work since 2015. They’re now set to launch a National Tax Database - a unified Tax database accessible to all tax authorities nationwide (national and sub-national).
Keep in mind Nigeria historically had one of lowest tax to GDP ratios in the world, low compared to even Ghana, SA.

Since 2015 FIRS has pulled in ~7m new taxpayers into Tax Net. They’ve also identified ~75,000 Companies— w/ substantial Turnover— that don’t file/pay taxes AT ALL
In 2018 @firsNigeria crossed, for the first time ever, the 1 Trillion Naira threshold in VAT collection, collecting 1.1 Trillion Naira

Today in 2004, Google went public. Founders, Larry Page and Sergei Brin (a Soviet immigrant) met at Stanford Univ, became “intellectual soulmates,” and dropped out of their PhD program to build Google in a garage they rented from (Brin’s then-wife’s sister) Susan Wojcicki.
2. Google’s early investors included Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, @amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Stanford University computer science professor David Cheriton, and entrepreneur Ram Shriram.
3. In 1999, Page and Brin offered to sell Google to one or their biggest competitors, Excite for $1 million (negotiated down to $750,000 by Excite’s investor @vkhosla), but Excite CEO George Bell refused the deal.

Today Google has a market cap of $830 billion.
