You can’t get a much starker warning than this. Airbus relies on working within a multinational cross border industrial and business environment.
We know that contingency plans have been made and people have been unable to speak out about that. But I urge you all to listen carefully to what Tom Enders is saying. It’s not just the jobs at Broughton at stake
It’s also the jobs reliant on the Airbus presence in the region, suppliers, supply chains, local businesses serving the workers, shops, restaurants. A large employer drifting away is like a domino falling over.
The dominos may fall more slowly and at first you may not notice a difference if your job is not immediately affected, but the damage of Brexit, whether it is no deal or any other deal, will be a drip drip drip of investment and enterprise ebbing away.
CETA the Canadian FTA with the EU took 7 years to negotiate. New FTAs with the EU have just been put in place with Singapore and Japan. With the best will in the world we will not be able to just do these deals overnight to replace the likes of Airbus.
Make no mistake in a no-deal scenario, overnight, not only do we no longer have access to frictionless trade in the Single Market, the biggest trading bloc in the world, additionally we will not have access to the many trade agreements already in place or about to be implemented
Leaving with no deal means essentially with have to start negotiating these deals across the world individually. It will take years.
Going with the withdrawal agreement doesn’t really give us a clear picture if the future relationship except that again we will be negotiating maybe for years on some things to get back just to square one.
The likelihood is we would have to agree to all kinds of standards and rules currently in place in order to put back our trade on a firm footing but we would have little control on those rules. The same with Norway type options. I ask you again. What is the point of Brexit?
There is only one thing to do. We need time to take stock of the consequences. Stop listening to Liam Fox who will tell you it’s easy. Stop listening to David Davies who thinks blackmailing our partners is the way to have cake and eat it
Stop listening to the likes of tbe ERG who are claiming WTO is a jolly hoot and we will have no problem. Ask yourselves, what have these people to gain and are their jobs and huge wealth at risk? I don’t think so. They can afford this enormous gamble. They have nothing to lose
Now ask yourselves what do you have to lose? What do your children and your neighbours have to lose? When it all goes horribly wrong, will you not regret taking that extra bit of time to stop, think, listen to industry, listen to experts.
Stop, Think, Reconsider the real implications.
