FWIW, the trope of “hippies spat on returning soldiers” was an urban legend created to drive a wedge between the very close connection between Vietnam veterans and anti-war activists, which is one reason I knew Phillips was lying about his service.
Read Lembcke’s The Spitting Image. Vietnam veterans were very active in the anti-war movement, and there are ZERO contemporary accounts of any returning soldiers being spat on. Nixon and future administrations pushed this idea to discredit the anti-war movement. It’s propaganda.
This is how I knew Phillips was lying about being a Vietnam veteran. The veterans in my family have weird stories and downplay their service. But like most fabulists, Phillips’ stories are just a collection of popular cultural tropes from movies. More: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spitt…

Literally every person who has been impacted by these things jokes about them.
Civilians always give terrible advice about comedy, so here’s some better advice: You can joke about any topic, but you have to be willing to do it in front of a group of people impacted by that topic. If it makes them laugh, you’ve got yourself a great joke.
White comics can tell a joke about black people, Christian comics can tell a joke about Muslims, etc., but if you aren’t able to make the “targets” laugh, your joke is probably hack and doesn’t get at the deeper truth that comedy is supposed to get at.

Thinking about that @DouthatNYT piece on the @slatestarcodex story about “Scissors,” which are viral news stories (like Covington) that are perfectly calibrated to reinforce everyone’s narratives and tear the country apart. How can we defend ourselves against this in the future?
One solution is to promote stories that are the opposite of a scissor. We can call them “rocks.” Rock stories are those that screw up everyone’s narratives. These have always been my favorite. A recent example:
Rock stories fit no common narrative and support none of the dominant sides in debates. We read them, our brains start to hurt, and we move on. We even call them “ironic.” But rock stories are actually more common than scissors, they just don’t go viral. But they should.

@chic_savage Take a look at this exchange. The way I see it is that @realDonaldTrump is a reprieve from the drive towards globalism. The next generation to start running things is the millennials. If you read the article you'll see why that's a problem.

@chic_savage @realDonaldTrump I'm a big believer in historical cycles. I'm fascinated by books like "The Fourth "Turning" and "The Decline of the West."

Going by the first book, we're scheduled to enter a massive crisis on the level of the American Revolution, Civil War, and WW2 which come in 80 year cycles.
@chic_savage @realDonaldTrump The second book is a deeper cycle that lasts over a millennium. The idea is that you sync up past cultures/civilizations with our own and see what happens.

Using Greece-Rome in parallel to Europe-America you get some incredible linkages.

All different races of Mankind are derived from Manu and Shradha. The current Manu is Vaivasvata Manu.
2/ The word Manu literary means man but it is a title given to the progenitor of mankind. According to Hindu Puranas there are many kalpas (One day of Lord Brahma the creator) and each Kalpa has 14 manvantara and each manvatara has one manu. So basically each Kalpa has 14 Manus.
3/ The current manu of the present manvantara is Shraddhadeva or Vaivasvata Manu of this current Kalpa. He is the son of Vivasvat (Probably Surya) and is therefore also known as Manu-vaivasvata.
