FWIW, the trope of “hippies spat on returning soldiers” was an urban legend created to drive a wedge between the very close connection between Vietnam veterans and anti-war activists, which is one reason I knew Phillips was lying about his service.
Read Lembcke’s The Spitting Image. Vietnam veterans were very active in the anti-war movement, and there are ZERO contemporary accounts of any returning soldiers being spat on. Nixon and future administrations pushed this idea to discredit the anti-war movement. It’s propaganda.
This is how I knew Phillips was lying about being a Vietnam veteran. The veterans in my family have weird stories and downplay their service. But like most fabulists, Phillips’ stories are just a collection of popular cultural tropes from movies. More: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spitt…
