Nissan sells across Europe.
70% of the cars made in the Sunderland factory go to other EU countries.
If Brexit makes cross-border trade more expensive, basing its factory here means 70% of its cars face a cost. If it moved to e.g Frankfurt only 30% would.
So, if it becomes more expensive for Nissan to keep its factory here in the long-term, what does that do to the 35,000 people across the North-East whose jobs and families depend on that factory?
It's not just Nissan. Derby's Toyota plant send NINETY PERCENT of its cars to mainland Europe. The maths there is pretty straight forward.
AND they've already got factories on the mainland ready to expand if needed.

Let's face it.
The type of Brexit that most of the 52% wanted when they ticked 'Leave' just isn't on the table. That's why Parliament is in utter chaos scrambling for a way out.
So we're taking over Parliament to give them one!

People wanted a Brexit that'd mean more control. But we've got a deal that takes us out of the most powerful decision-making bodies in the world but we'd still follow their rules.
If 52% voted Brexit when we were told we'd get a good deal, how many would've voted for No Deal?
If we've voted for something that is going directly against the wishes of those who voted for it, the only democratic solution is to have more democracy.
That means a #PeoplesVote on the Brexit Deal.

There were non-Brexit factors involved in the decision not to build the Nissan X-Trail in Sunderland. That's why the conversation is so messy, so let's just look at the Brexit effect for now. Thanks @SkyNews
With the X-Trail, a major factor was the new EU-Japan Free Trade deal, which a post-Brexit UK won't benefit from. So Nissan chose to build it in Japan, not Europe in general, but by the same logic, a UK OUTSIDE the EU-Japan deal would be even less attractive for other investment.
When Nissan said they would build the X-Trail here, this is what the government had promised them in 2016.

Of course he cited GATT Article 24. Because when the country's hurtling towards a National Disaster Brexit you created, go with: No deal is fine because we'll have a deal... That makes sense.
Article 24 requires BOTH parties to agree & just covers tariffs, not the Single Market.

1. There are plenty of #Brexit threads kicking around now on why the WTO option is bad. Unless you live in a cave or have the IQ of a halibut, you should by now have grasped the concept of what it means to be a third country and why that is ruinous for UK exporters.
2. You'll note that in the seventeen billion threads I've written on the subject that I seldom make reference to tariffs - because tariffs for the most part are neither here nor there. This is fundamentally about regulatory barriers where again the cave/halibut question kicks in.
3. Without full regulatory harmonisation there will be inspections, standard third country controls will kick in and there are no WTO rules that compel the EU to relax them and certainly not for the sole benefit of the UK. This is why we need a comprehensive agreement with the EU

Here follows a well crafted summary of the U.K. #Brexit position from the @guardian CIF section:
1. We are < 1% of global population (less without Scotland) To put things into perspective India produces more honours graduates than we produce kids.
2a. Without the economic muscle of the EU we do not have the means to get good trade agreements (Trade Agreements are staggeringly complex legal documents.
2b. Signing them is easy, getting a good one is the trick and that takes time, a team of knowledgeable and experienced negotiators and economic muscle, all which we don't have).

At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
