EU Parliament President Antonio Tajani after meeting Theresa May: ‘We are very concerned. We’re weeks from an economic and human catastrophe. This is the reality of of a deal Brexit. It would be a very dangerous solution.’
Tajani says the EU is ready to revisit the Political Declaration on future relations ‘including looking at the Irish situation again if the UK’s red lines change’. Stressed: ‘It’s impossible for us to change the content of the Withdrawal Agreement.’
EP Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt says May told him she’s not trying to ditch the backstop. Adds: ‘If there are problems with this backstop our proposal is to try and solve them in the Political Declaration. We’re open to upgrade the PD to make it more binding, more precise.’
‘How can you make the Political Declaration more binding?’ @adamfleming shouts after a retreating Mr Verhofstadt. That is the key question - the suggestion of doing so was the most interesting thing he said. But is it actually possible?
