Honestly, my favorite part of the whole exchange is that after she presented data in a paper, he presented anecdotal evidence while declining to read said data, she pointed out that wasn’t very scientific in spirit, he decided to end the conversation with this gem:
(brief addendum: I don't have a strong notion re: prevalence of gender bias & "mansplaining" and other issues of this ilk, but anyone with a touch of common sense ought to be able to see how silly this exchange was/is)

@GSCollins brought this up yesterday (citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/downlo…), so I decided to give this another read, and was struck by how accurate Altman's list of five troublesome questions at the very end was. These all spoke to me very much as a reviewer:
1) How much of a purist should the referee be (especially if it is unlikely that the 'correct' analysis will alter the findings)?
2) How much detail should the referee require of highly complex analyses that would not be understood by most readers?

As a member of #epitwitter that (currently) works mostly on RCT's, I can't resist saying a few words about this, even though @statsepi already did.
1) I do not like the way articles like this tend to divide us into two camps, that either a) WE TOTALLY NEED AN RCT FOR EVERYTHING or b) WE DON'T ACTUALLY NEED ANY RCT AT ALL.
2) it is clear that there are questions which will never be answered in an RCT. For those, the latest and greatest causal inference methods are clearly necessary, and we hope that they are able to accurately estimate/predict whatever it is we are trying to estimate/predict.

Question time (some of the specifics that follow have been changed slightly, but hopefully not enough that it affects the answqers): suppose that you've reported results of an RCT with HR=0.82 and p-value=0.08 for one of the trial's secondary outcomes.
You used the phrases "tended to ____ less" / "modest reduction in ____" / and "there was a small ____ benefit" to describe these results.
Not just one, but several of the manuscript reviewers say things along the lines of "The ____ results are not statistically different" and "The reported benefit of ____ has been overstated. There is no statistical significance"

My favorite part so far (paraphrasing): OK, so Manafort shared [presidential polling data] with Kilimnik. But why assume he lied when he failed to tell Mueller? He just forgot! He was so busy! After all, he was running a US presidential campaign. He can't remember EVerything. lol
Not only is NO COLLUSION a big lie. There’s so damn much collusion, it’s more like TREASON. We learned today 1) Manafort met Russian agent Kilimnik in Madrid during campaign, 2) Paulie shared polling data w/ him, & 3) They discussed “Ukrainian peace plan.” While Russia attacked.

Even through stones, people have attained because it is not a question at all to what you #surrender.

You surrender, and that brings the whole thing, that opens the door. Surrendering, the effort to surrender brings an opening to you.
If you are open to stone, you become open to the whole existence, because it is only a question of opening. How can you be open to a stone, and not open to a tree?

Every single one of these got the same response from Twitter Support :)
These were the only ones deemed bad enough to warrant removal. All were reported at the same time.
