At DUP spring policy conference Nigel Dodds tells party members: ‘we want a Brexit deal but we are very clear that a no deal is better than a bad deal.’
On the backstop: ‘there is virtually unanimity in political unionism that the backstop is dangerous for the union.’
‘It will be used as trap’ to either keep all of UK in high alignment with EU or to leave NI behind.
‘We seek a deal based on legally binding changes to the backstop, there are various ways that can be done. If she brings back the necessary changes we can make progress’
So no sign of anything shifting in DUP position.
Leader Arlene Foster says she recognises that are split views on Brexit & that families have divided - but her party must deliver on the will of the people.
Prospects of a deal? ‘We will not be afraid to say yes when the deal is right.’
Prospects for restoring Stormont? ‘we will say yes when the deal is sensible’ - but this came after a long passage when she suggested SF aren’t necessarily in the mood to deal.
