Listen up for a moment. I'm going to be honest here. The reason I haven't engaged a great deal with Labour politics lately isn't because I don't support the party, or the manifesto. It's out of self-protection. >
>Over ten years writing about the British Left - since the age of 21- I've been subjected to intense, debilitating bullying. Not just from the far left, either. Now, since Brexit, I've seen what has happened to my colleagues and comrades who say the 'wrong' thing. >
> I'm a sensitive, neurodivergent person. Some of the attacks I've had from the left have been truly traumatising. There's a lot I'd love to engage with, but the climate seems from the outside to be so toxic, such a vicious ouroboros, that I can't quite bear to. >
>And that seems to me a shame, because I can't be the only one. I can't speak for myself, but sensitive also often have a capacity for nuance and compassion, and politics needs more of that right now, not less.
Labour still has my support, and my vote too (when I'm not living in the one Green constituency). But right now they don't have my respect. And that means they get no more than the bare minimum of energy and attention. Again, I'm sure I'm not the only one.
*sensitive people.
