Frankenstein is a story of great ambition, terror and pity. It is a love story as well as a revenge tragedy. But it's major accomplishment was to plant the gothic into the soil of scientific rationality: the horrors that man create can outstrip the terrors of the supernatural.
Throughout the 19th century psychological and scientific gothic horror began to make its mark: mad creations of man, crazed séances and mesmeric powers lurked in forbidding houses...
Whilst the supernatural gothic turned towards vampires and etheric creatures. Gothic mystery and suspense were in, women with great hair fleeing houses was out.

In 1977 Texas Instruments, a recent entry into the market, cut its price for LCD watches to under $10. As a vertically integrated company it could still make a profit - but few of its competitors could. The LCD market began to collapse...
In comparison Seiko had fully automated its watch production, diversified into quartz analogue as well as LCD digital, and continued to innovate with new watch features. In 1979 it bought the now-defunct Pulsar brand. LCD was king.
Throughout the 1980s both Casio and Seiko continued to make LCD watches smarter. In 1980 Casio launched the Game-10 which let you play space invaders, and the C-80 - a calculator watch with a keypad you could actually use!

Another Stanislaw Lem novel, Fiasco (1986), is about alien life that simply refuses to communicate with us - despite our threats to destroy it if it doesn’t. Only at the end does the protagonist realise that the mounds of earth on the planet are actually the aliens.
Some books suggest aliens avoid contact with some planets until they become more mature. The Small, Still Voice of Trumpets by Lloyd Biggle Jr (1968) is about aliens who try to guide uncivilised planets to develop mature democracy before contacting them.
In Greg Eagle’s novel Quarantine (1992) aliens surround Earth in a force field to prevent us harming others, whilst Terry Bisson’s story They’re Made Out Of Meat (1990) suggests aliens are repulsed by how we look and deliberately avoid us. Looks like we're bad galactic news!

In 1950 Physicists Enrico Fermi and Michael Hart were chatting in the Los Alamos canteen when the topic turned to UFOs. Where were they? After a few calculations Fermi felt the probability of alien life was high enough; we just didn’t have any evidence ‘they’ were out there.
Frank Drake built on this in 1961. The Drake equation examined the probabilities of how many stars and planets could host life that could become intelligent and travel in space.

Life on Earth meant the probability of intelligent aliens must be more than zero, but how much more?
Answers to the Drake equation vary, depending on the probabilities you assume. But arguments about the Fermi paradox have sparked a number of ideas about extraterrestrial life (or the lack of it) as well as a number of science fiction plots.

I've been a fan of @rosie's for almost thirty years. So big in fact that back in the 90s I had not one, but two, talking Rosie dolls in my collection. One stayed on my bed, and one remained in the box. Dreams come true with Rosie, don't you know? My admiration has never waned. 1/
There are few artists with the kind of courage, "real guts" my dad would have called it, that O'Donnell has displayed throughout her career. I will never forget her uncomfortable, but powerful interview with Tom Selleck. Her talk show then was outlandishly popular. 2/
She was known as the Queen of Nice. And if she was the Queen of Nice, her show was the Show of Nice. Nothing untoward ever happened in that studio. Only love, sharing, and awestruck giddiness. Yet Ro was always clear about her values, but never as clear as with Selleck. 3/

Let’s talk about “ideas.”
People often equate “creativity” with “ideas.” So someone who is deemed “creative” is someone who has a lot of interesting ideas.

That’s fine if you’re talking about a preschooler.
But “ideas” are a very small part of the professional’s definition of what it means to be “creative.”

Here’s the truth: Ideas are the cheapest form of creative currency.
