/10 I am saddened and annoyed at this new position. This is basically a slap in the face to every education assistant in the province. #bced #inclusion #specialeducation #bcpoli #SD43 @CUPEBC @cupenat tricitynews.com/news/new-coqui…
/10 Supporting all students in the classroom is the role of the education assistant. Many have taken 2-years of coursework to prepare for the challenging work.
/10 Education assistant work eroded over the 16-year reign of terror unleashed by Christy and her crew. Services were stripped from vulnerable students and EAs had hours reduced.
/10 4. EAs are expected to look after multiple students in multiple classrooms. They are run ragged, often not getting the time to have proper breaks. Low hours, low yearly income and very little recognition.
/10 Recruitment and Retention is an issue for education assistants, we should be looking at ways to expand the EA role so they are supporting teachers in the classroom with all students.
6. Creating this piecemeal position with no set standards of post secondary education will only divide staff and create conditions that will cause many workload grievances.
/10 In 2008 @CUPEBC released The Malcolmson Report "Respect and Recognition" and since then services for students supported by EAs has worsened. 3523.cupe.ca/files/2014/07/…
/10 All the work that is described in the class spec. of this new Inclusion Support Worker role is work I have performed in my 25 years as an EA.
/10 Much of this work is done by EAs off the side of their desk while supporting identified students. School admin often places these students in classrooms with EAs for that reason.
/10 I see $$$$$ going down the drain to fight this in costly arbitrations, and Dave Ginter will fight this all the way! EAs are inclusion workers. Do not forget that!
