1/ Let's talk about the tedium of twitter and whether "crypto" should mean "cryptocurrencies" or "cryptography".
2/ Language evolves. "Decimate" no longer means "kill one 1/10th", it means "obliterate". Seriously, Roman legions punishing troops by killing a tenth of them is such a narrow thing you don't need a word for it.
3/ The issue at stake here isn't about whether language evolves, it's about confusion. It's as if people shortened "autonomous vehicles" to "autos". Since the contexts overlap, it leads to confusion, so this would be a bad idea.
4/ Of course, there is no overlap for cryptocurrency fans because they know nothing about cryptography. It's as if people became passionate about autonomous-vehicles having never ridden in an automobile before, and thus, not understanding the confusion of the word "autos".
5/ Anyway, the tedious bit is that you can't have this sort of discussion, because people will ignore what you say, and instead claim "but language evolves". They aren't listening to your argument accepting that language evolves, but that you have a different concern.
