As ever, the real Brexit/US chlorine chicken issues is this:

If UK wants to ensure its exports of animal origin can enter EU without them needing to enter via border inspection posts & be subject to checks it will need to remain within EU's SPS (food hygiene) regime.
If UK remains within the EU's SPS regime it will not have the flexibility to concede to US demands on agriculture. Therefore, probably no trade deal with US. Nut on positive side, no need for inspections on UK lamb exports at Calais/Irish border.

That's the trade-off.
(something something caveat re: Swiss technically being able to import labelled hormone grown beef despite otherwise applying EU SPS regime domestically and to imports)

If we unilaterally remove tariffs because of no deal aggregate consumer prices will not fall. #timestamp
(However they might not rise as much as they would otherwise. Maybe.)
If it comes about and I’m wrong feel free to remind me. But remember aggregate consumer prices would need to be lower than they are now. (If I was to be really mean I’d stipulate lower than pre-referendum)

Excellent new report just published by Northern Ireland's economic department looking at Brexit and services.

Here's their estimates of the barriers facing NI services exporters (as tariff value equivalent) of being outside of the single market.

There's no reason why this wouldn't be much the same for the whole UK. And in terms of impact it matches up with my own work on the post-Brexit impact on services trade.

Last year my trade with Farawayia grew from £10 to £30. It increased by 200%.

My trade with Nearbyia grew from £40000000 to £4500000. It increased by 12.5%.
(Obviously the missing zero from ‘£45000000’ in the above tweet was deliberate and a test to see who is being observant. *cough*)

No one voted to take away #citizensrights from EU citizens already living in the UK.
No one voted to put 3m EU citizens through almost 1,000 days of uncertainty over their status in the country they made their home.
No one voted to punish their EU neighbours & colleagues.

Whether people voted Leave or Remain they voted in the knowledge of the Vote Leave promise to EU citizens:
- no change for EU citizens

@DPhinnemore & I have scrutinised the WP in light of #JointReport commitments to NI/IRL & the UK's alternative #backstop.

The White Paper is in part an effort by UK govt to prove a NI-specific #backstop to be unnecessary. But remember Protocol for NI/IRL in the Withdrawal Agmt is abt much more than a customs border.

1. Could food, medicines and petrol run out in the event of a no deal scenario? The short answer is yes, absolutely. It only takes a small disruption to sophisticated supply chains for things to grind to a halt. (#Brexit thread).
2. Leaving without a deal means becoming a third country overnight. The UK would not exist as an entity anywhere inside the EU legal framework. We would be subject to third country controls without any of the single market approvals or valid certification.
3. If you don't have the valid paperwork for your goods to circulate freely then you have to find a named importer and have your products re-certified inside the EU - as considerable cost. Some classes of foodstuff must be diverted to border inspection posts.
