Brigadier General Emile Munemo, who died on Monday, was a commander in the Five Brigade during Gukurahundi. He once told a story of how they refused the Ndebeles to bury their dead, and killed those who wept 👇
Fifth Brigade consisted of 3 battalions of just over 1,000 men each. Emile Munemo commanded 24th Infantry Battalion stationed at Rushinga in Mt Darwin, which later deployed to Zvishavane from where it operated in the Midlands. By 1983 battalions were in Lupane, Tsholotsho, Nkayi
Munemo was promoted to Fifth Brigade commander in 1982, with Perrance Shiri the overall commander. Munemo was in charge of admin and logistics, Shiri training and operations. Munemo became overall commander of the Fifth Brigade in 1983
Munemo held view civilians were part of dissidents. "There was no way they were not aware, not part of it. The farm boy you see during the day is a guerilla at night. It would not have been possible for any military operation to be conducted sorely against armed bandits."
According to 1996 interview with Munemo, all involved government forces wanted "to deliver the final solution to the Prime Minister." The term "final solution" was used in Second World War with regard to extermination of jews
