PM’s spokesperson pours some cold water over reports today that the UK rejected a EU offer at the weekend: “I really wouldn’t characterise anything as being like that.”
If Theresa May is go to Strasbourg for face-to-face Brexit talks, she'd have to leave within the next hour, Downing St sources say. Stephen Barclay's postponed committee appearance suggests something will indeed be happening this evening.
PM looking at 2 scenarios: 1) Fly to Strasbourg tonight in hope of bringing back *something* on the backstop to sell to the ERG/DUP; or 2) admit that the WA being put to MPs is exactly the same as the deal which was crushed in January.
So the PM is set to arrive in Strasbourg at 9pm local time (8pm GMT) which gives her just 2.5 hours to discuss possible changes to the deal & table a motion before the HoC rises at 22:30 GMT. High drama but perhaps not the best way to run a country or rewrite its constitution.
