The politics of today’s no deal votes is messy

1. Government motion is a compromise-fudge, as it rules out leaving without a deal on March 29 but keeps no deal on the table

2. It will therefore be amended, likely successfully, to just rule out no deal. No vote on her motion..
.... 3. Removing the ambiguity means lots of Tories who believe in the need for the cliff edge will vote against it. Including cabinet ministers.

4. TM surely can’t vote in favour of straight opposition no deal motion. She abstains? Votes against? This motion free vote too? ..
... 5. The “no deal” motion could be carried - but on opposition votes, prompting “in office, not in power” accusations to grow against May.

6. And despite all of this, the motion has no legal force. The only way to stop no deal is to pass a deal or extend A50
