The no to no deal vote today adds no new information. We know only a minority back no deal. We know, and they know, that this doesn’t matter unless a stable majority forms for something else, because no deal is the default 1/2
All the attention and pressure now should be on those backing alternatives to May’s deal. We need clarity from them about how they would go about agreeing a *single* plan that can win a majority. Anything else is a waste of everyone’s time.
Here’s the real problem: There are at present enough die hard backers of both 2nd ref and soft Brexit to prevent either securing a majority. It is not obvious what information, if any, would make them back down and back their second preference to prevent no deal.
Probably the most likely thing that could break this impasse is the Con and Lab leaders as they can whip substantial numbers of votes. If both whipped for one outcome it wld pass. But May won’t consider any option except her deal & Corbyn seems unwilling to offer any clear pref
Given all of the above it seems to me, that despite everything, May’s deal still has a critical advantage over every other “not no deal option” - Con leader’s consistent backing. Which still gives it a good chance of being “last man standing” vs no deal.
