He was never reluctant.
Allow me to say: I would hate to see the Democrats run the sort of candidate who might appeal to somebody for whom Donald Trump is still an option.
I’m trying not to weigh in much on specific candidates, but a strategy of pursuing alleged conservative swing voters is a clear loser.
Meaning it will make winning an election less likely.
AND that the victory will be meaningless even if “we” win.

I think building a coalition that won’t fight the things Trump/GOP want to do walks a more dangerous line than does insisting on one that will, and I think the nomination process is the exact time to address it.
In fact that’s what that process is for.

We are in a fight. The first step to winning a fight is acknowledging that we are in a fight, and then determining to fight back, and hard.
If we “win” only by first agreeing not to fight back—which what these allegedly fence-straddling Trump voters want us to do—we lose.

But even if all you care about is seeing that D next to the winner’s name, a bipartisan strategy won’t get you that.
The fence-straddlers are lying. They’ll find a reason to vote Trump.
And people despair when those who should fight for them won’t.

Think of someone who is seen in the last forty years of the Republican Party, and still needs to be persuaded.
What would you have to offer to become in order to persuade such a person?
And what good to anybody would you be after you had?

This isn’t my “purity test,” whatever the hell that means.
It’s just some observations about strategy that I think are fairly obvious and should be kept front-of-mind if we don’t want to waste our efforts and betray our values.
