The basic problem with the Liberal Leave agenda was this dubious distinction between political and economic integration.

Political, monetary, security, border and economic integration aren't separate tracks. They are deeply intertwined. Those who stand outside several of those tracks yet remain in the Single Market are free-riding on the efforts of those who work to sustain the entire EU system.
That's why I am sceptical when Remainers claim the UK can be on the EU system's "top table" without involvement in Schengen, defence integration or the Euro.

So if they want to fully engage with how the EU system works and embrace a role for the UK through which it can help define it at all levels, then Liberal Leavers will have to sit down and rethink quite a few more assumptions than they have already.
