Robert Peary, 1909. The US explorer is pictured with his dogs, having arrived home after his final polar expedition. It was arguably his most successful mission, one he believed made him the first man to reach the North Pole.
Peary's claim to have reached the North Pole was widely debated in contemporary newspapers, but eventually won widespread acceptance. However, in a 1989 book by Wally Herbert concluded that Peary did not reach the pole, although he may have been as close as 60 miles (97 km).
