1/In rereading the Barr letter, is incredible how much it downplays success and significance of Russia's penetration of our political system. Senior Trump aides indicted, Russia''s candidate wins narrowly, entire GOP ecosystem spread Russian talking points.
2/Barr letter doesn't even hint at need to learn from what Russia did, and prevent it from happening again. Has no sense of urgency given what DNI, FBI have said abt Russia and 2020, rising cyber attacks against entire US.
3/Mueller report is titled "Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election." It isn't about Trump. It is about Russia's successful penetration of our political system. These findings cannot be kept from Congress for any length of time.
4/We could have more patience with Barr/DOJ if the President had taken more concrete steps to fortify 2020 elections, and has not continued to lie about the Russia operation in 2016 (last night again).
5/So, looking back now, hard to overstate how political the Barr letter really is. It is shocking really on so many levels. Rather than helping America come to terms with very real modern threats we face, will make it far harder for us to confront them.
6/Idea that you could look at everything that has happened here including Trump's public deference to Putin in Helinski and come out saying "no biggie" is just another in a long line of betrayals by Trump and those who have worked for him.
7/That Barr repeated ridiculous argument that you can’t have obstruction w/o proving an underlying crime is just stunning; ignores obvious possibility Trump’s obstruction was so significant it prevented proving underlying crime, conspiracy or that he was covering up other crimes.
8/My good friend Nelson Cunningham explains why legally Barr must turn over the full Mueller report to Congress without delay. Tracks the arguments above, is compelling.
9/Another reason Congress has to see full Mueller report - there's already body of public info abt Trump's serial efforts to defraud the public, cheat in the election, win w/help from Russia. A thread: Issues raised here huge, must be debated.
