Lori Lightfoot just became the first Black woman and first LGBTQ person to be elected Mayor of Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States. This also makes Chicago the largest municipality in U.S. history to be led by a Black woman and LGBTQ person.
Hard not to think of Black LGBTQ children who are watching history unfold tonight and perhaps watching their own futures. Pretty great feeling.

I admit that I remain skeptical regarding a movie about the Joker, but the trailer with Joaquin Phoenix is damn good and has me intrigued. That being said, it wouldn't be the first time a great trailer caped for a dud.
Also: with love and respect to Joaquin Phoenix, it would have been really interesting to cast someone other than a white guy. Jussayin'.
Now wanting to go through Joaquin Pheonix' filmography this weekend because there's so much good shit in there: Gladiator, Walk the Line, The Master, etc.

I attended a predominantly-Black middle school in Killeen, Texas. From 6th to 8th grade, I went to school with a student body in which white kids were a small fraction. And I did witness discrimination... against students of color. (thread)
Many, if not most, of my teachers and principals were Black. Most of the students were either Black or Latinx. There were some AAPI and Native American students. White students made up about a quarter of the student body. You, Stefan, think I'd be disadvantaged. You'd be wrong.
Because looking back, even as an impoverished white kid, everything I did was given the benefit of the doubt. Late to class? Late assignments? The occasional (though tame) misbehaving? All readily forgiven. I can't say the same for my peers of color, who were under a microscope.

I rarely make reference to religion here beyond noting the extreme hypocrisy permeating the evangelical Christian movement's support of @realDonaldTrump.

But next month @UMChurch will make a decision with far reaching implications and I feel compelled to comment.

In January 2017 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church appointed a 32 member body called the 'Commission on a Way Forward' to examine the church's official policies regarding the $LGBTQ community.

The Commission studied the issue for a year.

In March of 2018 they issued their findings. Their report was made public and handed over last year to the Council of Bishops for examination who spent weeks examining and considering its content.

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

Visionary #LGBTQ, civil, and human rights leader. One of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S.

His life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated nearly one year after taking office.

Harvey was born May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, NY. Harvey and his only sibling, Robert, worked in the family’s department store, “Milks.” They were a small middle-class Jewish family that had founded a Jewish synagogue and was well known in their community for their civic engagement.
Milk knew he was gay while attending high school, where he was a popular student w/ interests from opera to football.

While in college, Milk penned a weekly student newspaper column where he questioned issues of diversity and lessons learned from the recently ended World War.
