Are u seeing what I'm seeing lately in the @latimes? These past few months the paper has consistently & masterfully been doing something all news agencies should be doing every day: mirroring the communities we cover with our storytelling ⬇️
LA is one of the most fascinating & culturally diverse cities in the world. This year it’s been inspiring to watch my @latimes colleagues deliver story after story about Latino, Asian, black and MENA communities — all w/ nuance, humor, power & poignance.
There’s @AngelJennings who covers south LA. In the past days Angel managed 2 earn the trust of Nipsey Hussle’s closest relatives. She worked tirelessly 2 bring u some of the most intimate & powerful stories of Hussle's impact and deep devotion to LA.
There’s @sarahparvini who recently wrote about how Arab and Iranian communities for years have lobbied for so many reasons to create a separate Census category — beyond “white” — for people of Middle Eastern or North African descent.
There’s @frankshyong, the @latimes brand new & first Asian American columnist, who recently wrote this powerful piece about what Chinese food means in his family. It’s identity, language, culture -- themes we can all relate to.
There’s @melissaetehad who recently told a wonderful story from L.A.’s Tehrangeles about a group of Iranian men who have been coming together for 26 years to revisit their youth in showbiz -- long before the revolution drove them from home.
There’s the story I wrote a few days ago about the funny, nostalgic connection Latinos (and so many other cultures) have w/Vicks VapoRub.
And there’s @newsterrier who a while back wrote about her remarkable father, a man who over the course of 40 yrs, going door to door, grew the largest Vietnamese-language publication in the United States.
All these @latimes writers happen to b writers of color - black, Iranian, Salvadoran, Mexican, Vietnamese, Taiwanese. All of us r immersed in the vibrant communities we cover. We grow stories from our personal experience & from the constant trust we work 2 build across LA.
U know what’s most exciting? People r connecting 2 our work in profound, memorable ways — & in big numbers. I can’t tell u how many messages I’ve gotten from @latimes readers recently saying “Thank you. I feel seen! I can relate to this!” We hear u & we thank u so much 4 reading.
There’s so many more @latimes stories like these in our notebooks — all coming soon. So long as u keep reading, keep subscribing, we’ll be here — all over LA — working to give u many more stories u can connect 2 & relate 2. Gracias! ❤️🙏🏻 lat.ms/2UfvT85
