I overheard a conversation today that perfectly encapsulates how people talk about climate change here in TX. Here it is. (thread)

Man 1: It’s warm today...I bet they’ll say it’s Global Warming.

Man 2: Well you know they call it “climate change” now...but it’s the same thing.

M1: of course, everyone knows the climate is changing (in a scornful tone)

M2, nodding: it’s just a question of WHY.

M1: exactly. Everyone knows we’re getting warmer since the last ice age.

M2: when it’s all just an excuse to make all these changes it will cost a lot of money.

M1: that’s right, that thing they call the Paris agreement...it’s just an excuse.

M2: that’s right!

M1: and that even say sea levels are rising, when they’re actually falling.

M2: snorts with disgust and agreement

This is an classic real-life example of how sciencey-sounding excuses are directly connected to the real reason we reject climate science: because it implies climate action, and we’ve been told there’s no way to fix climate without destroying the economy.
