My reading this AM was Deut.26, instructions to the Israelites about bringing firstfruits of their harvests from the Promised Land in a basket to the altar before the Lord & reciting this fabulous nutshell version of their story with God: “My father was a wandering Aramean...” ->
After they recited the story, they were to set the basket down before the Lord, bow down to Him, then they, their households & the Levites were to rejoice in all the good things God had given them. 2 things stand out to me: 1)They knew how to tell their story richly, succinctly.
If you’re in Christ, you have such a great story. Learn how to tell it! And with brevity, texture, color, focus. Tell where you came from (don’t make it up or exaggerate - doesn’t have to be dramatic. He’s dramatic enough for you both) & what Jesus did. Write it out. Practice it!
Paul, the apostle, did this on many occasions. He shared the gospel so often through telling his own story. People still love people-stories. You’ve got one. Learn to tell it! 2) God had been good to them & they were instructed to take the time to respond to Him with rejoicing.->
Man, we need to rediscover the lost art of rejoicing in our God, particularly in an increasingly joyless culture. Think even in terms of John 15:8. Has Jesus brought fruitfulness from your life? Did you get to talk about Jesus? Give to someone? Serve someone effectively? Rejoice!
When did we last really rejoice? I don’t mean the last we were grateful. When did we last follow that gratefulness up with rejoicing? With demonstrations of joy? When did we last clap/cheer/shout/(dance?) for all God had done? Rejoicing’s our heritage. Our birthright. Reclaim it.
