The US is considering listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), one of Iran's two armed forces, as a terrorist organization. This is a bad idea, and one that is incredibly difficult to implement in practice. Short thread.

Why it's a bad idea: see @ArianeTabatabai on how it actually reinforces hard-liners in Iran. Other good arguments against the listing: it paves the way for war with Iran (very bad idea) and exposes US troops (which is why many in the Pentagon oppose).

To note, many in the Conservative party in Canada support this. The Conservatives included a call for listing the IRGC in the motion they tabled in Parliament in June 2018, which called on the Liberal government to cease reengagement efforts with Iran.

Did Iran emerge as the winner from the nuclear deal it agreed to with the P5+1 in July 2015? According to critics, the answer is yes: the JCPOA lifted restrictions on Iran and allowed it to enhance its position as a dominant player in the Middle East. (2)
For example, Donald Trump referred to the JCPOA as a “fantastic” deal for Iran. John McCain referred to a fast‐expanding Iran as “on the march.” Ray Takeyh wrote that Iran would become a “more aggressive imperial power” after the JCPOA, enabling its “imperial surge.” (3)

My handwriting's got worse in the meantime, doing so much more by keyboard and screen. It's still a physically different experience, more thoughtful, more physically creative. There's a different kind of feedback as you see your writing change.
"Why Social Movements Matter" was an unintentional book. @GeoffreyPleyers and the remarkable @lecollege_em at @FondationMSH made it possible for me to spend a month just researching and writing - which is an incredible privilege.

1) Raphael Lemkin, known as the father of the Genocide Convention, rejected the terms "Barbarity", "Mass murder", "Denationalization", "Germanization", "Magyarization" and many others to depict Hitler's attempt to annihilate the Jewish population.
2) He wanted a word that would - according to @AmbPower44 in her book "A Problem from Hell" - "connote a practice so horrid and so irreparable that the very utterance of the word would galvanize all who heard it". To Lemkin words mattered. So he came up with the word "Genocide".

2/ However, resorting to these methods to assert power in the political and international affairs sphere is always a sign of weakness and a sign of a power in crisis. #SaudiArabia
