Trump is a con man and too many Democrats make themselves easy marks by trying to wish into existence a world where Republicans still cared about anything besides pure power.
We don’t have to be like them. But we have to know who they are and not convince ourselves they’re some “West Wing” version of who we want them to be.
Trump’s nominee for AG covered up Iran-Contra and pre-judged the Mueller investigation but some Dems were like “this seems fine.” Their support for Barr enhanced his credibility with the press, making them more inclined to view his letter as credible. politico.com/story/2019/05/…

Bennet is very naive to think Dems could have prevented McConnell from nuking the filibuster long before Kavanaugh was nominated, or during his nomination at the latest. Bennet’s approach would’ve resulted in fewer Obama judges confirmed and the same outcome for Trump/McConnell.
It’s important to remember two things: 1) Dems going nuclear on nominees in 2013 allowed Obama to get many more judges confirmed than he would’ve gotten otherwise. More here via @jeffreytoobin newyorker.com/news/daily-com…

This x100. In 2009, Barack Obama was coming off a landslide victory backed by two straight cycles of huge Democratic gains in Congress that staked us to majorities in both houses of sizes we can only dream of today. If he couldn’t persuade Republicans, you’re not going to either.
In 2021 Republicans will be, at absolute worst, 2-3 seats away from taking back the majorty in 2022. The idea that they will work with a new Democratic president to help them pass signature legislation and have a productive two years going into the midterms is simply delusional.
It doesn’t matter if Democrats have a blue tsunami in 2020. McConnell’s obstruction strategy is the *exact playbook* Republicans used to bring Democrats crashing down to Earth after our massive victory in 2008. There is no rational reason why Republicans won’t simply dust it off.
