Most Democrats think Trump is an aberration and want their leaders to work with Republicans to unite the country. No one has ever made the case this model didn't work under Obama, so voters have never heard the counter-argument.
Democratic primary voters are doing well personally. They are wealthy and educated. Nearly all of them have gone to college. Three in ten have post-graduate degrees, and four in ten make $100k+. A third are over 60. brookings.edu/research/the-2…
Basically you're talking about old white women and black women who have gone to college, and are disproportionately upper income. This is Biden's sweet spot. This is who controls the Democratic Party. To them, things are fine, except the President on TV is miscast.
The biggest problem progressives have is they don't understand their views are not popular. They think because their issues poll well, they are the majority. They aren't. You can win things from a minority position, but not if you don't realize that's where you're starting from.
The point of attacking Obama as a bad President is to change the demographics of the party. If you want a working class party you have to build one. It doesn't just happen by whining about polls. You have to eject the reactionaries and replace them with young 'uns.
Progressives haven't bothered to internalize any of this so they keep losing. They've been losing since they placed a bad bet on Obama in 2008 and refuse to acknowledge their error. nakedcapitalism.com/2012/04/intern…
At this point, George W. Bush had begun a war that killed a half a million Iraqis. Trump has done nothing remotely comparable. Trump's a bad President, a threat to many important values. Bush was far worse. Anti-fascist LARPing is tacky and annoying.
I didn't see anyone fighting for the rule of law when Obama was eviscerating it, because it was our guy doing the misdeeds. Democracy is not 'my preferred guy letting white collar crooks do whatever they want.'
In the 1970s, the Democratic Party became a mostly anti-working class party of reactionary finance and tech friendly college educated suburbanites and corrupt urban machines. That's Biden's politics. He's basically a Watergate Baby. theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
Both parties will change because the massive generation becoming the center of America has too much student debt, health care costs are getting to truly insane levels, and there are increasingly destabilizing climate catastrophes. But there are no leaders yet.
