Much of this has been done deliberately with false metrics that newsrooms desperate for funding fall for, because all the money has been siphoned off by higher-ups giving themselves raises and paying off victims of sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of the creeps they hire
Remember pivoting to video? Facebook just made those numbers up. Remember?
How many high-profile media men have been sunk by credible sexual harassment allegations in the past few years? How many more do we not know about yet? Paying off victims ain’t cheap.
Journalism was never supposed to be a money maker. It is a public service. It needs to be treated as such. Turning it into a money maker and making decisions based on revenue and demographics is what has made journalism fall so hard so fast
Not to mention the endless, disgusting corruption and the unionbusting behavior, the inability to you treat their workers with any respect, the egregious theft of intellectual property as reporters copy each other’s work because it’s cheaper...
The only thing that will get us out of this now is funding journalism. That’s big tech’s job. Give back some of what you still. Believe me, if you do it now, you’re going to make yourself look a lot better... and you’re going to need that a lot more than you realize.
This brings me to a side issue that I’ve been wanting to address. We need to look at — and address —how men who have a known history of abusing or harassing women are covering women. That’s far more of a bias than “donated to a political candidate this one time” and yet it goes
completely unremarked upon. Because the white male voice has been the default in the United States (and elsewhere) for much too long. Therefore, only things that challenge that perspective are seen as truly irrevocably biased.
That’s how my insistence on examining racism and fighting for human dignity for all is seen as hopelessly opinionated and biased, but describing a female political figure as shrill and unlikable by men with known histories of trying to trap women in rooms with them is just fine.
I’m here to change all of that. And I’m not alone
But you know, even if I was it would be worth fighting for. True egalitarianism and respect for our shared humanity above all else is always worth fighting for.
